Design and Build of NPL Asset Management Platform in Japan & Korea

Commercial Real Estate

PROJECT OBJECTIVE

Design and embed core processes, systems, and reporting for a start‑up NPL asset manager in Japan and Korea to deliver investor transparency and enable scalable, locally owned loan operations and asset management.

Client Challenges
&
Pain Points

  • New entry into Japanese and Korean markets by mid-market distressed debt investment fund manager without existing platform.
  • Acquisition of 50% interest in major distressed debt portfolios in Korea and multiple 100% owned portfolios in Japan without established systems and processes.
  • High demand from parent company and third-party investors for transparency, but almost no visibility over underlying data or ability to do the most basic reporting.

Approach
&
How We Helped

  • Defined core data required for operational effectiveness, along with required reporting for stakeholders and related data.
  • Identified local functional leaders from young staff for: loan operations, reporting, asset management, and business planning.
  • Trained local leaders in each of these disciplines to develop processes and systems that could be locally embedded.
  • Implemented strict asset management business planning and “rollup” practices with intensive asset manager training.

Value
Provided

  • Achieved one-off manual reporting meeting stakeholder needs within three weeks of starting engagement.
  • Successfully embedded reporting and loan operations processes as BAU with high degree of automation.
  • Achieved asset management wins, positive investment performance, and repeat investment demand of co-investors.
